Overview
Thank you for using The Bike Station’s Wee Bike Library. This document sets out the Terms and Conditions for using this service. Please read it carefully and make sure you tick the ‘I Agree’ box before signing up.
General
The Wee Bike Library allows families to borrow kids bikes of any size between a balance bike and a 24” wheel bike. BMX’s are also included, depending on availability.
The Wee Bike Library is only available for people up to and including the age of 16 years old.
Families can borrow kids bikes for as long as they need it and there is no limit of how many bikes each family can borrow (assuming one bike per child). Please note that you will need to provide an estimated return date when you reserve your bike.
This is a free programme funded by Transport Scotland until March 2024, which means there is no cost to borrowing and repairing kids bikes borrowed from us during this period.
If, for any circumstances, The Bike Station has to cease operations of The Wee Bike Library then all rented bikes will have to be returned within 12 months after they were borrowed.
From time to time, we may contact you to provide feedback on the programme so that we can report to our funders. We will also contact you to remind you that the bike is due to be returned.
Customers agree to not offer for sale, sell, dispose, mortgage, lend, pledge or otherwise part with possession of the rental cycle(s) or equipment.
Reserving Bikes
Upon registration, customers must provide their card details and proof of address in order to be able to access the service. This is to ensure that The Bike Station can be compensated if bikes are not returned or if there are any problems with the bikes as detailed in clause 4.2.
Providing that bikes are returned on time, customers will not be charged at any point. Failure to return bikes on time, however, may result in a £10 charge per bike, per week.
Customers must choose a pick up date when they reserve a bike. If you fail to collect the bike on that date, please contact us as soon as you can and keep us updated. We will hold reserved bikes for one week and if customers have not got in touch with us within that period the reservation will be cancelled.
We aim to have a selection of bikes of all sizes available, however depending on uptake and on what bikes are donated to us we may, from time to time, be short of a specific size. Similarly, the bikes we provide have all been donated to us, so we cannot offer particular brands, models and colours. All bikes available have been refurbished and checked by our qualified mechanics.
Customers receiving a free bike through The Wee Bike Library are also entitled to receive a lock, lights and a helmet free of charge.
Customers are entitled to keep the lock, lights and helmet for the entire period they are renting a bike with The Wee Bike Library, regardless of how many bikes are rented during that period.
Customers must return the lock and lights if they are no longer renting a bike from The Wee Bike Library. For example, if a bike is returned and another bike is not rented out we would require the lock and lights to be returned as well. Helmets cannot be returned to The Wee Bike Library once they have been given out, so customers are entitled to keep these beyond the rental period.
Although we provide a size chart, customers may occasionally reserve bikes that are the wrong size for their children. Providing that we have the right size bike available and it has not been reserved, customers will be able to collect that bike instead of the bike they reserved originally. We cannot, however, guarantee that this will be the case as the bikes available depend on uptake.
Adult-sized bikes are not covered by this programme. If a child requires an adult-sized bike, the family would need to purchase the appropriate bike separately. Adult-sized bikes are considered to be any bike with a wheel size larger than 24”.
Customers must make sure that they reserve bikes located at their nearest branch. We will not transport bikes between branches if a customer in Edinburgh reserved a bike held in Perth, and vice-versa. If customers choose a bike at the wrong branch, they can cancel the reservation and reserve another bike at their local branch.
Problems With Borrowed Bikes
If the borrowed bike needs to be repaired or replaced due to a fault, please contact us so we can organise the repair or exchange. There is no fee for repairing or replacing a bike borrowed from the library before March 2024. Please note that in some cases an alternative bike will be provided instead of a repair, if the repair cost exceeds the value of the bike.
If the bike has been lost, stolen or damaged beyond repair, please contact us to let us know. A fee would apply in these cases to cover the value of the bike. The value of the fee will vary depending on the bike.
Returning Bikes
Customers can return their bike at any point and they can choose to exchange it for the next size up if they wish.
Customers may be charged if they fail to return a bike, as detailed in clause 3.2 above.
Safety
It is the parent/guardian’s responsibility for the rider’s safety. Cycling involves personal risk and anyone using a bike rented from The Wee Bike Library must ride responsibly.
First time or novice cyclists should use the equipment under the supervision of an experienced rider.
All customers renting a bike from The Wee Bike Library agree to use the bike at their own risk and The Bike Station accepts no responsibility for death, personal injury or any direct loss suffered that can be associated with the use of the bike or The Wee Bike Library service.
We hope that you have a great experience using our Wee Bike Library service.
Thank you for using the Wee Bike Library,
The Bike Station team.
